⏰ Set Up BEFORE You Fly
China's internet restrictions mean you cannot download or access many Western apps once you arrive. Complete these steps while still at home:
- Install VPN (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, or Astrill recommended)
- Download WeChat, Alipay, Didi, and Google Translate offline
- Set up Alipay Tour Pass or link foreign card to WeChat
1. Digital Payments: Alipay & WeChat Pay
Cash is rarely accepted in Yangshuo (and most of China). QR code payments via Alipay or WeChat Pay are essential for everything from restaurants to taxis to street vendors.
🌟 Easiest Option: Alipay Tour Pass (2026)
- 1. Download Alipay app before arrival
- 2. Open app → Search "Tour Pass" → Select "Alipay+ Tour Pass"
- 3. Link international credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB)
- 4. Load ¥500-2000 (non-refundable, valid 90 days)
- 5. Scan to pay anywhere you see Alipay QR codes
💡 No Chinese bank account required. Works immediately for foreigners.
Alternative: WeChat Pay
- • More complex setup for foreigners (requires Chinese friend to verify)
- • Some establishments only accept WeChat Pay, not Alipay
- • Also functions as China's primary messaging app
2. VPN: Accessing Western Apps
Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Gmail, and most Western sites are blocked in China. A VPN is essential to access these services.
Don't Get Blocked in China
Access Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Gmail while traveling. Most free VPNs do NOT work. We recommend Astrill or NordVPN.
ExpressVPN
✅ Most reliable in China
✅ Fast servers
💰 $12.95/month
⚠️ Install before arrival
NordVPN
✅ Good value
✅ Obfuscated servers
💰 $11.99/month
⚠️ Install before arrival
Astrill VPN
✅ Expat favorite
✅ Dedicated China mode
💰 $20/month
⚠️ Install before arrival
Critical: You CANNOT download VPN apps from the Chinese App Store. Install and activate your VPN subscription before your flight.
3. Didi: China's Uber
Didi is China's dominant ride-hailing app (Uber sold to Didi in 2016). Essential for getting around Yangshuo and Guilin.
How to Use Didi in Yangshuo:
- 1. Download Didi app (available in English)
- 2. Register with phone number (Chinese or international)
- 3. Link Alipay or WeChat Pay for payments
- 4. Enter destination in English or Chinese (use translate app)
- 5. Driver arrives, no cash needed
✅ Pros
- • Cheaper than traditional taxis
- • No language barrier (app translates)
- • Cashless payment
- • GPS tracking for safety
⚠️ Tips
- • Peak hours (8-9am, 5-6pm) = surge pricing
- • Save hotel address in Chinese characters
- • Screenshot pickup location if no internet
4. Safety & Smart Infrastructure
One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is just how modern and safe China feels. The infrastructure in Yangshuo puts many Western cities to shame.
5G Everywhere
China has the world's largest 5G network. You will likely have full 5G signal on top of Moon Hill, in the middle of a rice paddy, and throughout your high-speed train journey. Digital nomads can work from literally anywhere.
"Safe City" Safety
Street crime is virtually non-existent in Yangshuo. The widespread "Safe City" smart monitoring systems mean you can walk alone at 2 AM with expensive camera gear and feel completely secure. It is one of the safest travel destinations on earth.
Shared Power Banks
Never worry about battery anxiety. Every restaurant, cafe, and shop has "Shared Power Bank" stations. Scan a QR code (Alipay/WeChat) to rent one for ¥2-4/hour, and return it at any other station in the city.
