Downtown vs. Countryside:
Where Should You Sleep?
In Yangshuo, your hotel location dictates your entire experience. Stay in town for convenience, or the countryside for the "ink painting" dreams? Here is the honest breakdown.
There are really only three "zones" you need to care about. Choosing the wrong one is the most common complaint we see on travel forums.
1West Street (Downtown)
This is the beating heart of Yangshuo. It is convenient, chaotic, loud, and full of life.
The Good
- ✓ Walkable to 100+ restaurants
- ✓ Easy to find taxis/DiDi instantly
- ✓ Great nightlife and bars
- ✓ Convenient for buses to Guilin
The Bad
- ✗ Very loud until 2:00 AM
- ✗ Crowds can be overwhelming
- ✗ No "peaceful" mountain views from ground level
Verdict: Stay here if you want to party, are solo and want to meet people, or only have 1 night.
2Yulong Ecological Park (Countryside)
This is the Yangshuo you see on Instagram. No cars (mostly), bamboo rafts, and rice paddies. It is about 15-20 mins scooter ride from West Street.
The Good
- ✓ Stunning views from your window
- ✓ Silence at night (frogs/crickets)
- ✓ Direct access to biking trails
- ✓ High-end boutique hotels
The Bad
- ✗ Need to rent a scooter or take taxis
- ✗ Fewer dining options (mostly hotel food)
- ✗ Dark at night (not for walking)
Verdict: Stay here for romance, relaxation, families, or if you plan to rent an e-bike. Highly Recommended.
3Xingping Ancient Town
45 minutes north of Yangshuo. This is where the 20 Yuan note photo is. It feels like a separate destination.
The Good
- ✓ The most dramatic mountain scenery
- ✓ Authentic old town feel
- ✓ Close to High Speed Rail station
The Bad
- ✗ Isolated from main Yangshuo attractions
- ✗ Very touristy during the day (bus tours)
- ✗ Dead quiet after 7 PM
Verdict: Good for photographers who want sunset/sunrise shots, or for 1 night as part of a longer trip.
Summary Recommendation for 2026
If it is your first time in China, stick to the Yulong River area (specifically near Jiuxian village or just outside the park gates). You get the "dream" view but are only a 15-minute taxi ride from the West Street food scene.
For families: Yulong River (pool is essential).
For backpackers: West Street (Sudder Street area).
For luxury: Banyan Tree / Alila (Fuli area).
